MYSTERY REVEALED: It's 'Glass Gem' corn!Yesterday's "Mystery Pic" (below) shows an heirloom variety of corn called "Glass Gem" corn. Although the dominance of GMO corn is wiping out variety (some 80% of the corn grown in the US is GMO), some types from the incredible diversity of corn that used to exist can still be found. The Seed Trust got the Glass Gem variety from an 80-year-old part-Cherokee man in Oklahoma. Props to Martino IObit for being first with the right answer. Technology from Snow White: What was the Evil Queen's magic mirror, really?bish s originally shared this post: The Grimm Brothers’ description of the mirror is positively medieval. But in the language of Silicon Valley, that magic-mirror gadget was an augmented-reality display with face recognition and a voice-controlled artificial intelligence virtual assistant that was capable of querying remote databases of females ranked by fairness.- Mike ElganAmazing advancements in computers, interfaces and glass point to a future in which smart surfaces are commonplace in the home

Dog ramen getting more popular in China.Instant ramen noodles with dog meat is growing in popularity in China, according to a Hong Kong news report. There would be a joke here about "woking one's dog," but unfortunately this stuff comes in a Styrofoam cup. According to reports in Korea and Japan, the dog ramen is made in a region in China where there are a lot of Korean immigrants. But it's exported to Beijing, Guangdong and even to North Korea. The stuff is cheap, too -- about 30 cents per cup. China reportedly mulling a law against the consumption of dogs and cats.

Why Facebook's iOS app is so bad.Mobitest's Dirk de Kok wasn't content to just accept the horrible badness of Facebook's iOS app. So he decided to do a software teardown (OK, packet-sniffing analysis). The problem, he discovered, is that the app is a mish-mash of technologies, downloading data from facebook.com in the form of REST and HTML, which is problematic for an installed app. Some stuff is requested and returned by HTML, which takes some control away from the developer, especially for large amounts of data. Other stuff is handled by REST. The kludgy structure of the app…

Many people will ask why, but since I'm about to be on Air New Zealand for the lifespan of a fruit fly, I won't be able to comment-answer. But I'll make a post about it soon... If you want to see more of New Zealand, come to http://www.StuckInCustoms.com and click on the "New Zealand" category on the right. Thanks, and I'll see you on the other side!
